A day with Pops!
On Wednesday, July 17, 2019 I’ll be facilitating an all day (6 hour) lecture on “Satchmo: The Life and Times of Louis Armstrong” at The Juilliard School. Hope to see some familiar faces. https://www.juilliard.edu/stage-beyond/evening-division/summer-series#satchmo_louis-armstrong
Louis Armstrong remains one of the most influential and highly regarded entertainers in the history of Jazz and American popular music. His recorded output spans five decades and his electric stage performances elevated him to the level of one the most celebrated cultural ambassadors of the 20thcentury. The purpose of this class is to retrace his earliest musical developments, which begins very humbly in New Orleans, Louisiana. From this starting point we will use biographical information, select articles and most importantly recordings to discover the full scope of his journey. Along the way we will encounter the likes of Bessie Smith, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and many more.
