Gems in Jazz: Women Who Made an Impact in the World of Jazz
While the jazz community has always made serious strides to help ease the racial issues deeply entrenched in the American experience, its record on gender equity and inclusion remains in arrested development. Listeners, industry leaders, and artists alike often fail to give women a modicum of the recognition their male counterparts enjoy. And still, women have not only participated but also led in aspects of the genre since its inception. This course celebrates influential women in jazz, highlighting the leading ladies as well as the lesser-known essential contributors. We will use recordings, publications, and oral history to retell the stories of this vibrant and musically diverse sisterhood. No prior experience necessary.Wednesday, June 2
